Great discussion about our friend Jens this morning in the Toronto Star.
“Jens Hansen was relieved when he was handed his Canadian citizenship at a ceremony in Hamilton in January.
After being stateless for 20-odd years, Hansen, born in Holland to a Danish father and Dutch mother, finally found a place he can call home. His Canadian wife sponsored him for permanent resident status in 2001 but he still didn’t have a nationality or a valid passport.
“I was always a foreigner wherever I was,” said Hansen, 47, who now lives in Beamsville. “People chuckle like it’s a joke, but it is an issue for a lot of people. People are separated from their family and could face deportation any time.””
